My primary goal for desk holders was flexibility. I wanted the designs to have wide range of usefulness. The designs should have quality of changing itself according to the usage so as to get multiple benefits out of limited objects. This falls in the category of simple and practical objects.
An excercise to practice simplicity
I followed the method of more making and less thinking. I looked at the most basic structure, a box and asked myself how do people use boxes in different settings. The most basic answer was using it in two different ways: horizontally and vertically. That is when I began thinking and dismantling the box In an attempt to use one box In both ways.
This design achieved the concept of using the box horizontally and vertically but lacked effortlessness. I achieved my target of making a simple object.
For my next design, I followed the same method. I questioned the structure of box. I questioned the height and size of the box. I thought of bringing flexibility in the height of the box.
Now that I am in a place where I am not feeling stuck, I can be more focused on making simple objects that aligns with Jainism.
For the next step of my first design, I tried few more iterations to make the experience of using the box blissful and calming. To make the box, a jain object.
The second design lacks the quality of a clean design and a peaceful experience. It might look messy and cluttered in a space. Even tho it achieved flexibility, it lacked to motivate people to own less objects. This is an example of what would not qualify as a jain object.
